I am a highly experienced teacher of Bass Guitar, Double Bass and Music Theory. I offer one to one lessons for learners from a decicated studio room in central Bristol, as well as remotely via Discord. I really enjoy the time I spend with my students and imparting what I can to help their playing.

With me, you will be learning from someone who is taking an active part in the music industry and importantly is a specialised bass tutor rather than a guitarist who plays bass on the side. I can help you avoid falling into traps that are tricky to avoid as a self-taught bassist by learning good habits that support you as your playing advances.

Though I do insist on a minimum age of 18, all ability levels are welcome. I have students ranging from complete beginners all the way up to music undergraduates and professional musicians.

Lesson Content

The aim of my lessons is to provide you with a toolkit of transferable skills that will allow you to feel in control and maximise the enjoyment of your instrument, whatever you choose to do with it.

This usually starts off by getting a good foundation of technique and establishing the role of the bass in music. Ensuring a solid knowledge of the fingerboard is the next step. We can then go on to study a variety of subjects that includes ear training, improvisation, lead sheet interpretation, advanced techniques and much more.

I will tailor the lessons to fit your individual needs and goals. In fact, the more specific you are with what you'd like to achieve, the more effective and satisfying you will find the lessons.

For those wishing to pursue formal qualifications I have considerable experience guiding students through the Rockschool grading system. I have previously taught as part of BTEC and Degree level courses and have prepared numerous students for these programs of study and the auditioning/application process that proceeds them.

I am a Musician's Union member, insured for public liability and have an up to date DBS check.

Testimonials

Kieron Cheek:

"I've been studying with Sean for about three years now, and my playing has made more progress in those years than in the previous ten. Sean has taught me loads about basslines, solos, harmony, chord theory and technique, introduced me to some amazing music, and is a thoroughly lovely guy. I look forward to trying his patience for some time to come!"

Sally Kington:

"My bass lessons with Sean have been really helpful. He has helped me to improve my skills within my band. He is very calm and patient and always tailors the class for my individual requirements. I would highly recommend him as a bass teacher."

Oisin O'Maolain:

“A year ago I was playing bass just for the fun of it - now I’m studying a music performance MA. Need I say more”

Connor Judge:

"Sean is a great musician with experience, talent and fervor for the bass. If you want to progress as a musician you must understand how to adapt the fretboard to your needs instantaneously! Although such information is widely available, I've never had it explained as clearly as with Sean. He's a stickler about essential technique but designs his lessons to cater to player's individual needs and is thorough in doing so. I highly recommend him as a premier bass specialist."

Peter Locke:

"I have had Double Bass lessons with Sean and found him to be an enthusiastic and informative music teacher. He helped me not just with technique but could also advise on instrument choice and helped set up my Double Bass for me. For anyone wishing to learn bass, I thoroughly recommend Sean Davey."

Tom Marshall:

"I've been playing bass guitar for 30+ years and things have changed, but not me. I needed a hip, kool young dude to drag my ancient techniques into the 21st century. Sean's obvious passion and understanding of the instrument, plus his patience, are helping me get to grips with modern writing and technique."
